Every antenna is affected when exposed to various influences such as being touched.

The chip/firmware responsible for managing the antenna should monitor the dB drop.

The proper response to the dB drop would be to increase the signal strength.

I have read sources claiming that the chip does nothing to boost the signal. I have also read where the chip cut power instead of increasing it. I wonder how much of this is a pipe dream desire for a software fix being able to make the everything better?

I think it is very clear that there is a drop in reception when you touch the iPhone in a certain way. This can be stopped by adding a case, holding it differently or duct tape. This obviously is not up to Apple’s normal engineering level and clearly a major fault in the phone in many areas of the country. The only question left is how Apple will choose to deal with this issue. Partial fixes, recall, denial, replacement, in store repair, mail in repair, etc. are all still on the plate. Now lets see what they do!
